Activities

The enchanting city of Fayoum, with its moderate climate all year round, fresh air and clean environment, offers an incredible range of shimmering sand dunes, rich Ancient Egyptian, Greco-Roman and Islamic archaeological sites and incredible fossil remains. Discover another dimension of nature with Lazib Inn’s resident birdwatcher, trot through the waters of Lake Qarun on horseback, witness sunset from a felucca, hike through the sand dunes of Wadi Al Rayan or simply bask in the profound silence of the oasis at sunrise. A 4X4 ride through an otherworldly open desert landscape leads you to Madinet Madi, a labyrinth of fascinating, well-preserved Pharaonic temples from the late Greco-Roman period. A little further, Wadi Al Hitan, with its surreal array of whale skeletons rises from the sands. Back home at Lazib Inn, the art-filled Tunis Village is just steps away from your Oasis Suite door. There is so much to enjoy and explore in this exhilarating oasis!

Bird Watching

The oasis of Fayoum is one of the most important bird watching locations in Egypt. Birdwatching season is from October to April, when water, agricultural birds, and some desert birds migrate to the abundant oasis. A car can be arranged per 2 guests for transportation to and from the bird watching site for a 2 1/2 hour viewing session. Each guest will receive a pair of binoculars for the duration of the excursion.

Safari

Exploring Egypt’s Western Desert is a must when visiting Fayoum. Enthusiasts can discover the breathtaking terrain via 4X4 treks featuring a specially prepared and locally-inspired tea time deep in the desert at the end of the ride. Desert safaris run for 4-5 hours per 2 guests, and include transportation, light snacks and refreshments and visits to Magic Lake, Gabal Modawara and Wadi El Rayan.

Wadi El Rayan

A natural depression in the desert since ancient times, Wadi El Rayan offers spectacular sand dunes, an epic landscape and unbelievable rock formations. Comprised of two lakes, waterfalls and a spring oasis, Wadi El Rayan is home to rare wildlife, numerous bird and fish species and astonishing fossils from Fayoum’s past.

Wadi El Hitan

Originally an ocean bed, Wadi El Hitan, or Valley of the Whales, is one of the largest open air museums in Egypt. Designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, the valley is home to hundreds of fossils of the earliest species of whales.

Madinet Madi

Situated about 30 kms away from Fayoum, on a small hill guarding its southwestern entrance, is Madinet Madi—City of the past. The city, rich in Ancient Egyptian and Greek history, features Pharaonic temples built during the 12th dynasty’s Amenemhat III & IV with restorations made during the 19th dynasty.

Madawara Mountain

Madawara Mountain (Jebel al-Mudawara) lies on the edge of the Sahara Desert, to the west of Lake Qarun. The mountain is surrounded by sculpted sand dunes and limestone formations. A climb to the peak guarantees wonderful views of the surrounding terrain.

Felucca Rides

Indulge in a relaxing felucca sailing journey on the famous Lake Qarun, where the shimmering water, cool breezes and golden Western Desert sun will calm you. Guests will be picked up and dropped off at the Inn by Toktok, the local means of transportation in Fayoum.

Horseback Riding

Experience Egypt’s exceptional Western Desert on horseback. Fayoum is a fascinating city with a rich history, embodied not only by its monuments, but also by the oldest recognized horse breed— the Arabians. Horseback riding excursions start at one hour and include transportation to and from the Inn.

Pottery Classes

There is no place better than Tunis Village to experience the craft of pottery. Schools and art centers are scattered throughout the village and offer a unique opportunity to explore local arts and crafts. Pottery classes can be arranged depending on local workshop availability.
